Many more tears for J&J

Which would you prefer- some tears from your baby during bath time, or that child being exposed to harmful, possibly cancer-causing chemicals?  ...I think we all know the obvious choice.

In a world where it seems everything we ingest, use, or come in contact with could cause cancer, is it really that shocking that a shampoo is next on the list? I suppose the shocking part is that we all know the product and have likely used it: Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo, whose claim is "no more tears."

On Tuesday, the blog Jezebel published the story which was quickly picked up by news sources. The blog discusses The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics push for dioxane and quarternium-15 which releases formaldehyde to be removed from the popular baby shampoo.

In what could have been [and still could be] a huge PR crisis for the company, Jay Kosminsky, vice president of worldwide communication and public affairs issued this statement:
"Today a coalition of groups known as the Campaign fr Safe Cosmetics is issuing a report critical of some of the ingredients in Johnson's Baby products. The first and most important thing to know is that the products they mention are safe - up to our own high standards and approved by regulators in the U.S., EU, and China. Still, because we know that some consumers are concerned, we have made a number of changes to our product line over the past two years. You can read more about the actions we've taken on the Johnson's Baby site by clicking here."
Jay Kosminsky MAY have avoided a PR crisis here, yet he's saying they've made changes over the past 2 years- what will be done about these newest findings? He also directed people's attention to the J&J website to read more, which is a good PR move. J&J controls what goes on their website, no outside influences. So kudos to Jay for that. As for everything else, only time will tell but I'm sure the company will bounce back. As for myself, whose hair was washed with that shampoo for my first few years of life, I expect that I'll be just fine.
