PR Lessons Learned from "Saved by the Bell"??

Well, I wake up in the morning, and the alarm gives out a warning, and I don't think I'll ever make it on time... Great show, I wish it was still on every morning! An article written by PR Daily discusses some lessons we learned from "Saved by the Bell" that can be applied to the Public Relations field.

  1. Persistence doesn't always pay off. Screech asked Lisa Turtle out nearly every single episode, and was turned down nearly every one of those times. He never gave up though, he tried different approaches, but it never worked out. Persistence, as in badgering a reporter, may not always pay off in PR. Work smarter, not harder.
  2. When everyone is zigging, try zagging. We have another useful lesson from Screech here, thanks to his outfits on the show. He stood out in a crowd [often thanks to zig-zag patterns]. When blogging or in business, don't be afraid to go in a different direction than the crowd.
  3. Success is never as easy as it seems. Jesse Spano got straight As in school and everyone thought it came easily to her, until the episode when she took speed pills so she could stay up all night to study! Success is hard work and the people you may think are living the life, were probably putting in 80-hour work weeks in the beginning of their career.
  4. Regular communication is key to productive relationships. Zack Morris was in Principal Belding's office or Mr. Belding was visiting Zack in class almost every day. Yes, Zack was the class clown but maybe Mr. Belding communicated with him regularly to help Zack realize his full potential! Having open lines of communication in a business or in a client/agency relationship is important to everyone involved and make everyone feel valued.
Thank you, "Saved by the Bell," for all these lessons. Zach Morris, you still have a special place in my heart!
